Precision Farming in Kerala

Service Overview

Precision farming primarily focuses on applying nutrients, water, seed and other agricultural inputs to grow more crops in a wide range of soil environments.

Precision farming, as the name implies, refers to the application of precise and correct amounts of inputs like water, fertilisers, pesticides, nutrients etc. at the correct time and correct quantity to the crop for increasing its productivity and maximising its yields.

One clear benefit of precision agriculture is cost savings on inputs. How soon the grower can reap the benefits will depend on which technology is being implemented. Fertilizer is the highest variable cost for the farmer. Any technology that will help to mitigate this cost is going to be highly valued. The cost savings for the farmer can be felt both at initial input cost and in improved yield at harvest.

There are added benefits around lifestyle and convenience also.  Automatic systems reduce operator fatigue and free up time for other tasks and considerable time and energy can be saved.

Why Precision Farming?

  1. Kerala has a huge gap in demand and supply of food especially vegetables and fruits.
  2. Increasing population and development activities exert immense pressure (s) on land, compromising the availability fertile agricultural land for other purposes.
  3. Resources like water, land, and labor getting scarce increasing the input cost.
  4. Productivity should increase for sustainment.
  5. Solutions to these issues – maximize the efficiency and resources used.
  6. Precision farming provides a protected environment, provide inputs precisely for the crop growth and precise management activities are followed resulting in high productivity.
